There
is a famous story about a gold miner. He bought a mine and started digging. He
dug a thousand feet, there was no sign of gold. He dug another thousand feet,
still no gold. He went up to three thousand feet and there was no trace of
gold. Frustrated and exasperated he Gave-up. He sold the mine and the entire
machinery at an exorbitantly low price to another miner. The other miner just
dug three feet and he struck gold.
This
is what happens to most of us. We give-up without knowing how close we are to
success. Ask any Mountaineer, he will
tell you that the climb to the peak is the toughest and most of the climbers
give-up at the final stage. The same is with us, whether it is our job, money,
health or relationship. We want to lose weight or just be fit. We join a gym
and are regular for 10-15 days. Then when we don’t see the expected improvement
we give-up. This is one of the main reasons why obesity is spreading like an
epidemic.
We
invest our whole life in a relationship and when it starts getting sour,
instead of trying to mend it we take the easier route of breaking it. The
greatest number of cases today in the courts are that of divorce. The story
repeats itself for the younger lot who are trying for the job. They try at a
few places but rejection gets too tough for them to handle and they give-up
trying. Entrepreneurs dream of having their big company but when their first
few ventures fail they give-up on their most cherished dream and start looking
for a job.
The
difference between a successful man and the one who has failed is that the
successful man has failed more number of times than the failed person has even
tried. Let us see why most of us give-up. Most of us over-estimate our ability
to achieve things and under-estimate the time to achieve it. Stated simply we
have unrealistic expectation of ourselves. Losing 15 kgs in a month is possible
but is it realistic for you? Turning a
new venture into a billion dollar company or turning a flawed relationship into
a beautiful one within a short time are the same. Learn from nature. Everything
takes time. There is a reason and a season for everything to happen, have
patience.
Everything
that we think or do is recorded in our sub-conscious mind like a tape. Whenever
we start a new habit as simple as getting-up in the morning, the tape comes in
the way. It wants you to adhere to your earlier habit of over-sleeping. You
have to take over controls and show that you are more powerful than the tape
and jump out of bed. The same thing happens when you start a new diet/gym
routine, a new venture or a new relationship. You should always know whether
you or the tape is in control. Once you know, it is easy to take over.
Before
Success comes to us, it tantalizes us. It tests us whether we are worthy of it
or not. You must have witnessed it that you will have a series of things going
in your favour and suddenly everything dries out. Most of the time it happens
because success gets into our heads and we become arrogant, forgetting to be
humble. We do not show the basic courtesy to our partners, clients, customers,
colleagues and our bosses. We don’t even treat ourselves properly, getting into
some self-defeating behaviour like envying the successful and the rich people.
The moment we get into competitive plane, comparing ourselves with others or
other companies we lose touch with our creative selves. And to be successful we
have to be creative. The only competition we have is with ourselves, always.
In
spite of all the gyan, there will a time when you really want to throw in the
towel, raise your hands in exasperation and want to give-up. Remember the night
is the darkest before the dawn. Any successful person will tell you that he had
faced such moments too. But they had a vision of their larger picture and were
ready to pay the price. Ruben Gonzales, a four-time Olympic Gold Medallist
says, “I am not a big shot, I am a small shot who just kept taking shots.”
Success will come to you if you have a die-hard attitude, have infinite
patience and if you Never ! Never ! Never Give-up.
